Time:2025-06-05,AM 08:19

On May 30th, the International College hosted a unique celebration in honor of the Dragon Boat Festival, attracting nearly thirty international students to participate in a rich cultural experience. Through hands-on activities and storytelling, international students explored the historical roots of the festival and experienced the distinctive charm of Chinese folk traditions. Amid the fragrant aroma of zongzi and colorful threads of braided cords, the event built a meaningful bridge for mutual cultural exchange between China and the world.

Tracing the Origins: Understanding the Culture

The event began with a vivid introduction to the Dragon Boat Festival's history by Miss Eva from the International College. From the patriotic poet of the Warring States period, to the traditional practices of warding off disease, to the dragon boat races symbolizing unity and teamwork, Miss Eva explained the rich customs associated with the festival in an engaging way. The international students listened attentively, occasionally raising thoughtful questions, showing great interest in the deep cultural heritage behind the celebration.

Wishes in Colorful Threads: Crafting Intangible Heritage

After learning about the cultural significance of the festival, the international students tried their hands at making traditional five-color cords, a folk craft associated with blessings and protection. Each color—red for protection, green for vitality, and others with their own meanings—carried traditional symbolism and reflected the aesthetic values of Chinese culture. Guided by the teachers, the students gradually picked up the braiding techniques as the threads danced between their fingers. Step-by-step tutorials displayed on-site helped the students complete their handmade crafts smoothly, creating a unique and memorable token of the festival.

Fragrance of Zongzi Across the World

Next came the zongzi-making session. Ingredients such as glutinous rice, red dates, and bamboo leaves were neatly arranged on the tables as teachers and students gathered around. Teachers demonstrated each step with care, and the international students followed closely, eager to try their hands at this time-honored tradition. The refreshing scent of bamboo leaves mixed with the sweet aroma of glutinous rice filled the air, turning the activity into a sensory experience that linked participants to the essence of traditional Chinese customs.

Culture Touches the Heart, Exchange Shapes the Future

As the event came to a close, the international students took group photos holding the five-color cords they had braided and the zongzi they had wrapped by hand. This Dragon Boat Festival event provided them with a valuable opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese traditional culture through hands-on participation. It not only enriched their cultural experience but also promoted meaningful cultural exchange and integration between Chinese and international communities.
